The Beginner Microcontrollers workshop provides a robust 5-session introduction to using microcontrollers, including hands-on projects, the principles behind how they work and applications of use.
This workshop covers beginner-level microcontrollers, circuitry and programming, providing a starting point for anyone looking to build their skills in this exciting field of engineering. Through a series of Arduino microcontroller programming and sensor manipulation projects, participants develop the skills and understanding that form the basis of this field.
- Understand capabilities and applications of microcontrollers
- Utilize microcontroller interface
- Learn about voltage, current and resistance using Ohm’s Law
- Visual understanding of the hardware structure of Arduino UNO
- Understand Arduino UNO programming GUI (Graphical User Interface)
- Analyze and troubleshoot circuits using Ohm’s Law to calculate specs
- Read PCB schematics and build circuits on breadboards
- Use #define programming C component
- Understanding fundamental properties of a series circuit
- Visually determine characteristics of resistors
- Use Arduino UNO to gauge operational range of Photo-Resistors
- Use Arduino UNO to read analog signals to control RGB LEDs digitally

What are office hours like? Weekly office hours are available for participants remotely for assistance with homework or questions about the material.
Workshop Microcontrollers Kit: The Controlling Lights Kit is used for classwork and homework and is available for purchase. Kits are also available on loan during workshops and office hours for no charge, but can't be taken home. Previously purchased the Controlling Lights Kit for the Intro to Microcontrollers Workshop? The same one is used for this workshop.
Laptop Requirements: Participants use their personal laptop, with no system requirements to run Arduino software.
