The Intermediate CAD workshop provides a 5-session training that builds upon the skills learned in the Beginner workshop. Workshop topics include designing, assembling and simulating components to fabricate a functioning pneumatic (operated by air pressure) robotic arm.

Participants learn how to use the same CAD features that professional product designers and engineers use to design and test their products, gaining hands-on experience with industry leader AutoDesk's Fusion360 software. These are the essential skills needed to become a professional or teacher in industries including biomedical engineering, automotive engineering, robotics and more.


    • Understand how to identify and use CAD features to create components and joints and to run simulations
    • Constrain and place translational, rotary and cylindrical joints
    • Run stress, modal frequency and shape optimization analyses to test and optimize parts
    • Alter material properties to accurately prototype models
    • Create animations and isometric drawings to present designs
    • Troubleshoot and develop mechanical parts using workflow tools and other Fusion360 features
    • Create assemblies for 3D printing and physical prototyping

    What are office hours like? Weekly office hours are available for participants remotely for assistance with homework or questions about the material.

    Meet your Instructor

    Elizabeth Adelaide

    Elizabeth is an experienced robotics teacher and practitioner, teaching with Iridescent for four years, and has worked on projects including urban resilience efforts to ease access to solar power and emergency communications, CADing for integrated circuit design and product design, and developing autonomous robotics algorithms.

    She believes in hands-on, processed based learning and developing the skills needed to approach new problems. She is also a poet who can be found giving readings in various parts of NYC.
