Developing skills through creativity

Fundamentals of Fabrication (FunFab) combines computer-aided design (CAD), math, orthographic drawing, entrepreneurship, and career development to help students prepare for STEM pathways in industries from aerospace to biomedical.

In this program, student teams create digital models and 3D prints of branded products and compete to sell them in a Shark Tank-style competition.

FunFab prepares students for success in STEM courses of study and careers by providing collaborative, student-centered activities that align with rewarding careers.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

• Grades: 6-12
• Format: Summer, after school, elective, internship, or integrated into standard, AP, or PBAT math class
• Duration: 6-20 weeks

FUNFAB MODULES

FunFab includes five modules, a Shark Tank-like pitch competition, and CUNY Mentorship:

Accommodations available for learning disabled and neurodivergent and advanced learners.

MODULE DESCRIPTIONS

Module 1: Ideation / Intro to Entrepreneurship

Students learn the basic concepts of ideation and entrepreneurship, including iteration, target audience, profit margin, Cost of Goods Sold, and more.

Module 2: Orthographic Drawing

Students practice spatial reasoning by creating diagrams that include important features and relationships.

Module 3: CAD / 3D Printing

Students learn Autodesk CAD software to create 3D printable projects. Each student takes home a 3D print of their unique design at the end of the program.

Module 4: Pitch Deck / Competition

Students create a professional-style presentation to pitch their design to competition judges. Pitch Deck topics include Problem, Product, Audience, Price, Market, and Team.

Module 5: Career Development

Students are provided a mix of career roadmapping, resume and LinkedIn profile development, and email communication.

CUNY Student Mentorship

Students receive college and career mentorship from a trained CUNY student, with activities including 1) Career Roadmapping, 2) Brand Development (resume, LinkedIn, mock interviews), and 3) Skill Building (from counseling to Python), as well as CUNY application assistance.
